STRIPES tests new GPS tracking system

Stripes MUColumbia, MO: STRIPES, a student-run volunteer organization that provides free, safe and confidential rides to University of Missouri students, is testing a new GPS tracking system. According to spokesman Andrew Worrall, it will help the organization run more efficiently.

STRIPES stands for Supportive Tigers Riding In Pursuit of Ensuring Safety. The organization allows students to serve their peers, while keeping the MU campus and community safe. Comprised of over 200 volunteers, STRIPES offers free rides to students on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Drivers will now be supplied with Comet Tracker equipped cell phones before they pick up riders, so the dispatcher can quickly and easily track each STRIPES car through the driver's cell phone.

Worrall said they had been looking into adding this system for about a year and calls it a "big step" for the organization. "From a risk-management point of view... it's a necessity," he said, citing increased safety and accountability for the drivers and patrons.
